The 3rd International Seminar “Institutional Responses to FGM/C” was held at ISCTE-IUL in Lisbon in September 28th and 29th.
This Seminar brougt to the discussion the inherent complexity of institutional responses to FGM/C through contributions of experts from various African countries (Guinea-Bissau, Senegal, Guinea Conakry and Mauritania) and other European experts that work on these cross-cutting contexts and other related themes, linking these contributions with the exchange of experiences and also with a reflection on the institutional responses in Portugal.
Were present at the opening of the Seminar the ISCTE-IUL Vice-Rector for Research Fernando Luís Machado, the director of CEI-IUL Luís Nuno Rodrigues, the Principal Investigator MAP-FMG & Project Coordinator at URJC Laura Nuño, and the Project Coordinator at ISCTE-IUL Clara Carvalho. The inaugural session was rendered by the Secretary of State for Citizenship and Equality, Catarina Marcelino, and the keynote speaker was Fatou Sarr Sow.
The following roundtables focused on the models of Combat and Prevention of FGM/C in West Africa and in the Implementation of Human Rights Conventions and Treaties in West Africa. The speakers from African and European countries shared some examples of their research in Senegal, Gambia, Guinea Bissau, Guinea Conakry and Mauritania, and each session was followed by a debate. At the end of the first day there was the screening of the documentary “This is my body” with the presence of its screenwriter Inês Leitão.
The second day of the Seminar was dedicated to the different institutional responses to FGM/C. The presentations were about interventions in the United Kingdom, in Switzerland and in Sierra Leone, and also about the work that is being done in Portugal by NGOs, associations, by the Directorate-General of Health and the Gender Equality Commission.
This seminar was organized by the CEI-IUL team, with collaboration of students from the International Studies Master, Ana Amorim, Marta Cardoso, Rita Lopes and Sara Portugal, and with the CEI-IUL intern Andrea Rubini.
MAP-FGM video spot was also launched the first day of the Seminar with the presence of its director Pedro Neto.
A book about the Seminar with the speakers’ presentations will be published in the beginning of 2018.
